Oil India Limited Raises Rajasthan Output 70% Amid Strait of Hormuz Risks

Oil India Limited has lifted crude production in Rajasthan's Baghewala field to 1,202 barrels per day, a 70% jump from 705 barrels last year. This surge arrives as the Strait of Hormuz closure threatens global oil supplies, a route that carries nearly 60% of India's oil and gas imports from the Gulf. The development offers a timely buffer for India's energy needs against mounting international pressures.
Production Gains in Jaisalmer's Desert
Total crude output from the field climbed from 32,787 metric tonnes last year to 43,773 metric tonnes in the 2025-26 financial year. Company engineers developed 19 wells in the area and drilled 13 additional ones to test reserves. These steps mark a deliberate push to expand domestic supply at a moment when external disruptions loom large.
Overcoming Thick Crude Challenges
Oil in the Thar Desert resists standard extraction because of its heavy viscosity. Workers apply cyclic steam stimulation to heat and thin the crude, alongside diluent injection and artificial lift systems. Such methods demand precision and investment, yet they enable recovery where conventional drilling fails.
Energy Security in a Tense Global Market
India's heavy reliance on Gulf imports heightens vulnerability to Strait blockages, which could spike prices and strain economies worldwide. Rajasthan's gains reduce that exposure slightly, signaling potential for further domestic growth. As testing on new wells progresses, output could rise more, bolstering national reserves over time.
