Maryland Terrapins head coach Brenda Frese came nose-to-nose with guard Oluchi Okananwa on the sideline during the third quarter of their 74-66 loss to the North Carolina Tar Heels in the second round of the NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament on March 22, 2026, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.[1][2]

The confrontation followed Okananwa's turnover, three missed free throws and a missed layup, after which she was substituted.[1] The game was played at the Tar Heels' Dean Smith Center arena.[3]

Maryland entered as the No. 5 seed, facing the No. 4 seed North Carolina in the best-of-one knockout format second round.[1] Okananwa led Maryland with 21 points, six rebounds, two steals and six turnovers.[1]

"I believe in you, but you got to want this moment," Frese told Okananwa.[1] Okananwa later said she appreciated the coaching style: "Coach understands I’m a competitor at heart... I love to be coached hard. That’s what she does with me every single day."[1][4]

Frese, who has coached Maryland since the 2002-03 season, said post-game: "It’s always been a pulse that I’ve been able to have with individuals and players... The best of the best want to be coached hard."[1] Her career record stood at 688-208 entering the tournament, with prior stops at Ball State and Minnesota.[1][5] She led Maryland to the 2006 NCAA title.[5]

It was Okananwa's first season with the Terrapins after two years at Duke, where she averaged 17.7 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game while earning All-Big Ten honors in 2025-26.[1]
